New Energy Sources
Bioenergy
- Principal Investigators: James Collins, Srikanth Gopalan, Uday Pal
Research is being conducted in using waste to synthesize fuels and produce electricity. Advanced genomics technologies are being developed and applied to optimize the metabolism of microbes for fuel or electricity production. Micro-fabricated devices are being developed to enable electricity production directly from microbes.
Nuclear Energy
- Principal Investigator: R. Glynn Holt
Inertial confinement fusion enabling technologies.
Ocean Wave Energy Technologies
- Principal Investigators: William Carey, Mark Horenstein, J. Gregory McDaniel, Allan D. Pierce
Boston University produces, optimizes, and refines game-changing technologies for collecting, storing, and transmitting ocean wave energy. Our goal is to produce cost-competitive systems for delivering ocean wave energy by developing strategic partnerships with other organizations who specialize in sea-worthy and storm-ready engineering. Our unique and eclectic group of mechanical and electrical engineering researchers have over a century of combined research experience in wave mechanics, vibrations, energy conversion, and electromechanical systems.
We are actively seeking additional partners with expertise in this field of activity.
Photovoltaics
- Principal Investigators: Ramesh Jasti (conceptual demonstrations indicate that carbon nanotubes could be used in enhanced solar energy applications), Xi Lin, Malay Mazumder (solar energy), Theodore Moustakas (inorganic photovoltaic materials),
