Brief Biography:

Sucharita Gopal received her PhD in Geography at the University of California, Santa Barbara.  She is currently a Professor in the Department of Earth and Environment at Boston University and an affiliate of the Center for Remote Sensing.

Gopal’s research over the last ten years is multi-disciplinary and has dealt with spatial analysis, GIS and artifical neural networks. She applied spatial analysis to address a variety of problems in biology, environmental science, public health and business. She also worked on uncertainty issues related to GIS. Gopal used neural networks for pattern classification, estimation and mixture modeling. Her current funded research includes examining spatial determinants of insectivorous bat diversity in Malaysia and multiscale models in remote sensing and GIS. She is affliated with the Cognitive and Neural Systems (CNS) Technology Laboratory at Boston University and also does outreach focused on using spatial thinking and technologies for K-12 education.
