Dr. David Whittier is coordinator of the Educational Media and Technology Program and Director of the Instructional Materials Center at the School of Education. In addition to designing the curriculum for the academic program in Educational Media and Technology, Dr. Whittier’s teaching responsibilities include the history and philosophy of educational technology as a study within the field of education (EM-550); Cyberethics and Policies for Technology Use (EM-630), and Research and Design for Distance Education (EM-680 – online). Dr. Whittier also supervises the faculty and curriculum for the technology labs required for undergraduate and graduate students seeking professional licensure as teachers through the Boston University School of Education.

The IMC, or Instructional Materials Center, is the computer lab and media center for the School of Education. As Director of IMC, Dr. Whittier manages the staff and facilities such as the multi media classrooms and computer labs that serve the SED community. The mission of the IMC is “Supporting Teaching and Learning with Technology.” Dr. Whittier’s research interests encompass designing technology-based materials to most effectively support teaching and learning in classrooms, adult training environments, and online educational experiences (The Teacher as Software Developer); the experience of teaching online (Time Online); Cyberethics and the meaning of technology in education and society (The Techne Project); professional development for higher education faculty, in-service and pre-service teachers, and using technology to support and develop the knowledge building communities.

Mark Correia teaches EM-570 Introduction to Interactive Software Development, a 2 credit course in the program in educational media and technology and EM-565 Technology Operations where he shares his experience and wisdom in building and sustaining school and college based media centers. Mark earned a masters degree in instructional technology from Lesley University learning the theory, research, and practice associated with the field. Mark is an experienced and expert manager of instructional technology resources and keeps the BU-SED Instructional Media Center (IMC) humming on a daily basis.

Mark has extensive knowledge and experience in all kinds of educational media and is an educational technologist who understands the necessity of having the needs of teachers, students, and learning objectives drive the use of technology in education.

Reza Dr. Reza Sisakhti

Dr. Reza Sisakhti is a lecturer at Boston University, where he has taught graduate courses in instructional design and technology-based learning since 1986. Professor Sisakhti continues to serve on dissertation committees for doctoral students. Professor Sisakhti is also the director of Learning and Performance Strategy Consulting at Productivity Dynamics. He is the author of Effective Learning Environments: Creating a successful strategy for your organization. Dr. Sisakhti has served as consultant, researcher, and training designer for business and industry around the globe and specializes in the adult learning and training track of the EM&T program.

Dr. Sisakhti is the author of Effective Learning Environments: Creating a successful strategy for your organization. Professor Sisakhti was the recipient of ASTD “Best Practice Award” in 1997 for designing a learning strategy for Digital Equipment Corporation, in 1999 for assessing the effectiveness and business impact of a large-scale leadership development program at GTE, and in 2001 for assessing the effectiveness and business impact of an e-learning program at Verizon Communications. Prior to joining Productivity Dynamics, Professor Sisakhti was the director of the Learning Strategies Practice at Gartner Group. He was responsible for developing strategic business plans, defining the portfolio of services, interfacing with clients, identifying clients’ strategic directions, and defining and implementing strategies to improve employee productivity through learning solutions.

Reza Sisakhti received a BA in the foundations of education in 1975 and a Master’s degree in educational psychology in1978 from Shiraz University. In 1983, he completed a Ph.D. in instructional systems technology at Indiana University. Reza also received an MBA from the Whittemore School of Business and Economics at the University of New Hampshire in 1992.s.

Bob Thomas has been a teacher for over 20 years. He has taught K-8 students in a variety of settings and is currently working as an Instructional Technology Specialist at the pre-k to 8 Michael Driscoll School in Brookline, Massachusetts. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Virginia Tech and a Masters degree in special education from the University of Virginia. He taught in Virginia, Indiana, and Massachusetts and also spent 5 years teaching for the Department of Defense Dependents Schools in Italy. Bob is an expert in the design and delivery of instructional technology resources in the public school sector and supervises many of our student teachers seeking licensure as an instructional technology teacher.

Shabbi-Luthrapict Dr. Shabbi Luthra

Dr. Shabbi Luthra earned her Ed D at Boston University and her Ed M at the University of Houston. She has served as a k-12 teacher, trainer, and technology coordinator at the American Embassy School in New Delhi, India; the Dubai American Academy, Dubai, U.A.E.; and in fall, 2005, Dr. Luthra became technology director at the American School in Bombay/Mumbai(ASB), where she teaches and directs the implementation of a wireless, campus network for one of the world’s premier 1:1 laptop programs. Dr. Luthra is an award winning instructional technologist and architect of the ASB-Unplugged conference in Mumbai that attracts top educators and visionaries that inform and inspire educators around the world.

Dr. Luthra has taught courses and workshops at Boston University and other locations around the world and is an expert both in technology and in using technology effectively in support of teaching and learning. Her doctoral dissertation focused on the stages teachers go through and their beliefs about the value of technology in gaining comfort and competency using technology in their teaching.

brian Brian Grossman

Brian Grossman is an adjunct faculty member in the School of Education. He teaches EM 670, Advanced Interactive Software Development. He holds both a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Computer Science from M.I.T. While at M.I.T., Brian researched techniques for improving students’ ability to conceptualize math concepts by developing intelligent educational software. Brian brings a rich combination of competencies to our program as an experienced software architect and engineer, a high school mathematics teacher, and is Technical Director for Fablevision, a premier educational and interactive software development company.

Brian has been a software developer in the educational software industry since 1997. He has worked at a number of companies including WGBH, Classroom Connect, Tenth Planet Exporations, and Six Red Marbles. Currently, Brian is a Solutions Architect at FableVision in Cambridge where he leads the development of web and CDRom products for educational publishing companies. Brian has also been a high school math teacher.

Jonathan (J-jay) Araullo has been deeply involved in news and information television programs for the past fifteen years in various capacities. Before pursuing his doctoral degree in Boston University in Educational Media and Technology, he served as consultant to both government and non-government organizations in creating educational programs for elementary schoolchildren in the rural areas. His main interest is to find ways to create sustainable educational development in rural areas with the aid of technology. J-jay teaches digital video production and editing for education and serves as a multimedia developer for the BU Office of Distance Education where he brings online education alive through designing and developing rich multimedia resources.

Jonathan completed his bachelor’s degree in Communication Arts from the Ateneo de Manila University in the Philippines in 1991, after which he was employed in a variety of positions in the broadcast television industry in the Philippines. He took a leave from the broadcasting industry in 1997 to pursue his master’s degree in Telecommunication Management in Michigan State University. After earning his master’s degree in 1999, he went back to the Philippines where he was involved for five years in producing educational television projects for rural schools and in teaching broadcasting at the university level. He is currently pursuing his doctoral degree at Boston University in the Educational Media and Technology program.
