Public and Media Relations

Depending on circumstances, the Office of Public and Media Relations (OPR) will assign a staff member to be present at the scene of an emergency, and another to be based either at the Command Center in the role of Information Officer.

OPR staff on-scene will: gather current information and convey it to OPR staff at the office or the Command Center; coordinate on-scene information flow to reporters; and serve as liaison with the On-scene Commander, BUPD and outside agency spokespersons. OPR staff may designate other staff, based on expertise and command of current information to speak to reporters.

The senior OPR staff member at the office or Command Center will work with the Command Center staff and on-scene staff to develop and maintain summary information about the emergency appropriate for release. (Key points in determining appropriateness of information for release include accuracy; protection of individual privacy, especially for students and security of police investigations). OPR staff will log media inquiries, coordinate individual and group responses; monitor media coverage for accuracy in reporting, and take corrective steps when necessary; and refer personal inquiries to the Dean of Students or other offices as appropriate.
