During an emergency event on campus (or an off campus event) that necessitates the implementation of the BU Emergency Response Plan, any or all of the procedures listed in this section may be activated.

These Emergency Response procedures span the length of the emergency event from notification to post event critique or aster action report.

There are three Emergency Phases used during a response to an incident at Boston University.

Phase A Emergency  is the initial response to a potential emergency situation or an actual event when the impact on the CRC is uncertain. For example, an approaching blizzard or hurricane might trigger an Emergency Alert. At Phase A, the University's Incident Command Response Team is notified and might assemble at a designated Command Center. The Team consists of senior managers from key University departments. The Command Center is a secure location equipped with special communications equipment.

Phase B Emergency is an actual emergency that impacts the CRC and cannot be handled by on-site personnel in a routine fashion but does not necessarily require the activation of the command center or the arrival of the full command staff. For example, a widespread power failure or a large hazardous material release on campus would trigger a Phase B response. The purpose of Phase B response is to quickly mobilize personnel and resources necessary to deal effectively with the incident.

Phase C Emergency   is a large scale emergency or disaster that requires the recall of off-duty personnel or contractors. In a Phase C Emergency, overall University coordination is transferred to the Command Center. It may be necessary to temporarily acquire buildings, supplies or equipment or relocate students, faculty or staff and closely coordinate with public safety agencies.
