The Boston University Emergency Response Plan establishes a procedure for mobilizing the University's resources and communicating with the Charles River Campus (CRC) community in the event of a large-scale emergency. The Plan was revised under the direction of the Director of Emergency Planning and Response in cooperation with over a dozen departments, colleges and offices as well as public safety agencies and is updated annually. A campus-wide emergency response drill is conducted every 18 months to test and improve upon the Plan. The Plan is reviewed and revised annually.

To effectively manage any emergency event at the University, and to ensure a seamless interface with local public safety emergency responders, Boston University has adopted the National Incident Management System’s Incident Command System used by local, state and federal government agencies.
