Research operations which rely on high volumes of a single solvent are often good candidates for on-site solvent recovery.  Distilling waste solvents into useable product reduces the amount of money spent on chemical purchases as well as on chemical disposal.  Each gallon that is reclaimed is a gallon that is kept from the environment.  Experience has shown us that the quality of the reclaimed product is high enough for many laboratory applications.

Currently, Boston University and Boston Medical Center operate solvent recovery units in three locations, and reclaim hundreds of gallons of solvent each year.

A researcher interested in solvent recovery for his or her laboratory should contact Environmental Health and Safety (Charles River Campus: 3-4094, Medical Campus/Boston Medical Center: 8-8830) to discuss location, material and volume considerations.
