Determine the volume of collection for an air sample, in order to achieve proper analytical sensitivity.
For example, in order to determine whether someone has exceeded the OSHA PEL for a particular chemical, a minimum volume of air must be drawn through the sampling media in order for the sample results to be statistically accurate.
Note that this formula requires the PEL to be input in mg/m3. The sensitivity for a particular analytical method should be determined by either contacting the laboratory to be used for the analysis, or referencing the NIOSH Manual of Analytical Methods.
