For info about the "Celebration of the Nation" on the evening of July 4: Check out the Boston Pops concert.

This event is free to the public.
Be prepared to arrive very early to get a seat on the Boston Esplanade Hatchshell Oval for the Boston Pops Concert.
The fireworks can be seen from anywhere along the river, and revelers can tune into the concert on the radio.
However, the best seat in the house to see the fireworks is from the dock at Community Boating.
There is a paid admission fee including a barbeque.

If you're interested, there will also be a Fourth of July reading of the Declaration of Independence. It's at the Old State House which is near the Government Center subway stop on the Green Line and starts at 10 am on July 4th. Captain Commanding of the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company will read the famous words of America's Declaration of Independence from the balcony of the Old State House, where it was orginally read on 18 July 1776.
