The Call to Greatness: A Search for Moral Integrity in the Urban Classroom

by Vanessa Johnson

This project is developed with the needs of students at Brighton High School (in Boston, MA) in mind. The student body of Brighton consists of inner-city youth. The student population is approximately 48% Black, 45% Hispanic, 5% Asian, and 2% other (including white and Native American). The vast majority of the parents are immigrants, as are many of the students. Most of the students at Brighton are second language learners.

This framework is designed for the 11th grade English Language Arts classroom. This framework can be universally used as a mode for bringing questions of moral integrity into the classroom. Its purpose is to create a classroom community of interactive learners and writers, and to develop analytical skills for writing in response to literature.
