Accessing the Data Network

Access to data maintained by the IED Research Data Network is generally restricted to the BU Economics community because some data sets are licensed only to the Boston University Department of Economics. Further restrictions may apply depending on confidentiality agreements or other intellectual property rights governing the free distribution of a data set, or if the contributor of a data set has otherwise specified additional restrictions. For this reason, access granted to data sets from the IED Research Data Network is handled on an individual basis, and individuals who are granted access to a data set may not distribute it to anyone else.

Data maintained by the IED Research Data Network resides in a data bank on the CAS server at Boston University, and access to particular folders within the data bank is handled on an individual basis. In order for a new data bank user account to be established, users must first link their accounts to AD.

Please see below for further instructions on gaining access to data maintained by the IED Research Data Network .

Procedure for accessing freely available data

Step 1: Data maintained by the IED Research Data Network resides in a data bank on the CAS server and access to particular folders within the data bank is granted on an individual basis. In order for a new data bank user account to be established, users must first link their accounts to AD if they have not already done so. Note that if you have a personal web page on people.bu.edu, your BU account is already linked to CAS.

Step 2: After you have linked your account to CAS, please send a request for access to ied@bu.edu to obtain access to data freely available to the BU Economics community, along with the following information:

  1. The title of the data set as listed in the network’s main catalog
  2. Your full contact information (name, department, address and room number, phone, email)
  3. Your BU ID number

Step 3: You will be granted (read-only) access to a protected folder on the CAS server containing the data. After you receive a response indicating that your access has been set up, follow these instructions to access the folder. You may not share data obtained from this folder with anyone else.

Procedure for accessing collaborative data maintained by IED

Step 1: To obtain access to collaborative data maintained by the IED, first contact the contributor directly using the contact information on the listing in the main catalog if it is available. If the contributor’s contact information is not listed in the main catalog, send an email to ied@bu.edu. Proceed to the next step only after you and the data contributor have agreed to collaborate on work using the data set.

Step 2: Data maintained by the IED Research Data Network resides in a databank on the CAS server and access to particular folders within the data bank is granted on an individual basis. In order for a new data bank user account to be established, users must first link their accounts to AD if they have not already done so. Note that if you have a personal web page on people.bu.edu, your BU account is already linked to CAS.

Step 3. After you have linked your account to CAS, please send a request for access to ied@bu.edu along with:

  1. The name of the contributor with whom you are collaborating
  2. The title of the data set
  3. Your full contact information (name, department, address and room number, phone, email)
  4. Your BU ID number

Step 4: The IED will contact the contributor to verify the collaborative agreement before granting any data access. Upon verification, you will be granted (read-only) access to a protected folder on the CAS server containing the data. After you receive a response indicating that your access has been set up, follow these instructions to access the folder. You may not share data obtained from this folder with anyone else.
