Travis
My name is Travis (ECE ’10) and I majored in Electrical Engineering. My research focused on using light as a communications medium for a vehicle. The goal was to design a system to allow car headlights and tail lights to “talk” to other cars on the road. This creates a network of “talking” cars that all know the location, speed, etc. of other cars nearby on the road. This information can then be used to inform the driver of safety concerns, traffic issues, or could even let the car drive itself.
I’ve also worked on embedding similar technology into general-purpose LED lighting. As LEDs begin to replace conventional lightbulbs, our technology will ensure that there is data connectivity wherever there is electrical lighting. I’ve found that performing my own research as an undergraduate provides a hands-on, interactive, and fun style of learning that cannot be achieved in the classroom. The technical experience I’ve gained has been as important and useful as the knowledge gained from classes.
