Ashley
Hi, I’m Ashley (ECE ’13), and I’m doing research with Professor Ruane developing educational engineering tools in the Photonics High-Tech-Tools-and-Toys Lab. I’m designing a system that can hold up a ping-pong ball in mid air at a user-specified height using the airflow of a fan. A camera watches the ball, processes the height, and sends the information to a controller. My job is to write code to interact with the camera and a servo motor to control the flow speed of the fan and, ultimately, the height of the ball.
As a freshman, I was especially grateful to have an opportunity to do research that year. I continue to learn a lot and everything applies directly to what I’m learning in class — in a fun and interesting way.
