Engineering Approach to Treatment of Diabetes

With Dr. Katarzyna Radecka
McGill University

Faculty Host: David Castanon

Refreshments will be served outside Room 339 at 12:45 p.m.

Abstract: Diabetes is a chronic disease reaching epidemic proportions worldwide. Its treatment requires the administration of insulin several times a day. However, unlike other chronic diseases, in this case the dose of medication varies with each application due to factors such as exercise, current blood glucose level, carbohydrates consumption and variations in personal metabolism.

This talk will present the progress in our research at McGill University aimed at the development of hardware and software solutions for better management of diabetes by tracking exercise, food and blood glucose levels. In particular, we will discuss the multi-sensor embedded processor platforms, and their integration with a continuous glucose monitoring system. Further, we will describe metabolism modeling and a microfluidics platform testbed implementing the model. Finally, methods for improving accuracy and the precision, as well as the self-calibration of continuous blood glucose monitoring system will be outlined.

The talk will conclude with an overview of the undergraduate design projects at McGill’s ECE Department.

About the Speaker: Dr. Katarzyna Radecka received her Ph.D. from McGill University in Electrical and Computer Engineering. Before her doctoral studies, she worked for Lucent Technologies, working on design and testing of communications hardware. Following her Ph.D. work, she joined Concordia University as Assistant Professor. She subsequently rejoined McGill as Lecturer and Adjunct Professor. She is co-founder and Principal Technology Officer of ExerMeta Inc., a company that develops distributed sensors systems for the management of diabetes.
