Research Interests

Joanna C. Carey is a biogeochemist and ecosystems ecologist focusing on elemental cycling along the land-ocean continuum (forests, rivers, salt marshes, and estuaries) in temperate and Arctic ecosystems. She focuses on how anthropogenic activities, namely land cover and climate change, are altering the rates and timing of material exchange between various reservoirs on Earth (plants, soils, atmosphere, aquatic systems). The majority of her research focuses on silicon cycling, specifically the important role of land plants in the global silicon cycle.
