The challenge has been put forward by University Trustee and alumnus Richard Cohen (CGS'67, SMG'69). The Cohen Challenge follows the example set by Sidney (COM'62) and Lisa Feltenstein with their 2009 challenge, which generated more than $1.6 million in new and increased Annual Fund gifts.

The challenge will match gifts from alumni, parents, friends, faculty and staff members, graduating seniors-anyone who gives to a BU Annual Funds during the challenge.

The challenge applies to Annual Fund gifts made now through June 30, 2010.

Mr. Cohen will match, dollar-for-dollar, all new and increased Annual Fund gifts made before June 30. This applies to all of the University's annual funds: school and college funds, Athletics funds, and the central funds (area of Greatest Need Fund, General Scholarship Fund, Libraries Fund, and the Student Life Fund).

  • If you did not make a gift to an Annual Fund last fiscal year (July 1, 2008 to June 30, 2009), this is a great time to contribute. Give today and Mr. Cohen will match the entire amount of your gift.
  • If you did support Boston University last year (July 1, 2008 to June 30, 2009), please renew your gift today. If you are able to give more than what you gave last year, Mr. Cohen will match the amount of your increase.
  • If you already made an Annual Fund gift this fiscal year (July 1, 2009 to June 30, 2010), thank you for your support. If possible, consider making another gift by June 30. The amount of your additional gift will be matched by Mr. Cohen.
Please Note: Mr. Cohen's challenge matches the amount of Annual Fund gifts, but will be designated separately. All of the matching funds donated by Mr. Cohen will be designated to student scholarships. The donor-designated Annual Funds-schools, colleges, athletics, etc.- will receive the full amount contributed by the donor. Boston University's fiscal year runs July 1 to June 30.
