Why should you become a RA?

Positions Available

Resident Assistant – The resident assistant (RA) is a Residence life student staff member living on a floor or within a residence area who works with residents in that living area. RAs are selected for their concern for fellow students, their leadership skills and their willingness to meet the challenges and expectations of the position to the best of their abilities. RAs are trained to provide support and assistance to students on a variety of issues.

Senior Resident Assistant – Senior resident assistants (SRAs) are graduate students (with a Bachelor’s degree) who serve in a “senior staff” role where they assist the Residence Hall Director/Assistant Area Director or the Area Director in the supervision of the RA staff.


Selection Process

RA Selection takes place in two rounds: Round I and Round II. Round I takes place during the early spring of 2010 and is for applicants who are currently enrolled students at Boston University. Round II takes place in late May and is for newly admitted graduate students and transfer students at Boston University.

Round I:

To apply for Round I consideration, please do the following:

  • Read thoroughly the document entitled, “RA Selection 101: An Introduction to Residence Life and RA Selection at Boston University,” which is a downloadable PDF document found here.
  • Attend one of the following mandatory RA Information Sessions:

Session # 1: November 12, 2009, 5:00 p.m., Towers Franklin Lounge

Session # 2: December 4, 2009, 3:00 p.m., Warren Towers Cinema Room

Session # 3: December 10, 2009, 6:30 p.m., Warren Towers Cinema Room

Session # 4: January 13, 2010, 7pm, Student Atrium at 10 Buick Street

  • Download the PDF application here. You must complete all parts of the application per the instructions.
  • Compile your 2 letters of recommendation and submit with your completed application. A recommendation form is available as a PDF document here.
  • Submit 2 copies of your completed application to Residential Education, 19 Deerfield Street (2nd Floor).

Applications are due by 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 14, 2010. No electronic submissions will be accepted.

All applications will be reviewed thoroughly and a select number of applicants will be invited for Individual Interviews, which take place in early spring of 2010.

Important Information for Students Accepted to Spring 2010 Study Abroad Programs:
In order to receive full consideration for Round I, students who have been accepted into spring 2010 study abroad programs must submit their RA applications (including recommendations, corresponding materials, and verification of acceptance into a study abroad program) to Residential Education, 19 Deerfield Street (2nd Floor), by Friday, November 20, 2009. For more details please see page 15 of the document entitled, “RA Selection 101: An Introduction to Residence Life and RA Selection at Boston University.”

Round II:

Information and application materials regarding the Round II selection process will be posted here by March 1, 2010. In the meantime, please read thoroughly the document entitled, “RA Selection 101: An Introduction to Residence Life and RA Selection at Boston University,” which is available via the links at the bottom of this webpage.


Requirements

  • Full-time junior, senior, or graduate student
  • Cumulative grade point average (GPA) of at least 2.70
  • In good University disciplinary and financial standing

Commitment

  • 20 hours a week, including a 4 hour staff meeting on Wednesday evenings and two weeks of August training on-campus.

Deadline

  • January 14, 2010 by 2pm
  • If you are going abroad Spring 2010, there is a special application deadline: November 20, 2009.
