Summer Positions

FYSOP Program Manager (1 positions available) – The FYSOP Program Manager (PM) is responsible for planning, organizing and executing the Community Service Center’s First-Year Student Outreach Project (FYSOP). The FYSOP PM is in charge of hiring, training and advising a staff of 20 coordinators and overseeing the staff hiring process. This position runs for the entire 2010 calendar year (Spring Semester, Summer and Fall Semester) unless you are a graduating senior in which case you will not be expected to work the Fall Semester following FYSOP. Applications will be available for the 2011 FYSOP Program Manager next September 2010.

FYSOP Coordinator (20 positions available) – FYSOP Coordinators (FYCOs) are responsible for the planning and implementation of the First-Year Student Outreach Project a program that invites first-year students to campus a week prior to the start of school to volunteer in the greater Boston area. FYCOs serve as liaisons between the CSC and incoming students and their parents as well as between the CSC and community organizations. FYCOs are paired together and assigned to one of ten Issue Areas. Working together, the Coordinators create a comprehensive educational packet, plan an eight hour day of education (including speakers), and coordinate three days of service (including reflection) for every participant in their Issue Area. FYCOs also serve on a Project Committee. Each committee creates and implements program wide activities for FYSOP.

Program Assistant (2 positions available) – Program Assistants (PAs) serve as liaisons between the CSC and incoming students and their parents, as well as between the CSC and community organizations. This includes fielding questions, promoting CSC programs, and coordinating fall events and activities. Throughout the summer, PAs will assist the FYSOP project committees. This includes processing applications, mailing confirmation packets, and being able to respond to questions regarding the project and the University.

Academic Year Positions
Program Manager (23 positions available) – Program Managers (PMs) serve as liaisons between the CSC and interested student volunteers, faculty, staff and alumni as well as between the CSC and community organizations. PMs are specifically responsible for recruiting, matching and overseeing the volunteers within their specific program for the entire academic year whilst supporting the CSC as a whole with various one time events. There are program specific positions available as well as office based positions available. Applications for Program Manager positions will be available in January 2010.

Deadline

You must hand deliver your application to the Orientation office by 4 p.m. on Thursday, January 28, 2010. If you are a returning applicant, hand deliver your application to the Orientation office by Thursday, January 21, 2010.

Requirements

  • You must be in good academic, disciplinary, and financial standing with the University.
  • While there is no formal GPA cutoff, high academic standing is expected.
  • No one may hold a position while on academic probation.
  • You must display strong interpersonal communication and leadership skills, as well as the potential to develop these skills throughout the program.
  • You must be able to attend all staff training sessions and program dates including those in spring, summer, and fall.
  • You must be returning to Boston University for the 2010-2011 academic year. You may go abroad in the fall semester.
  • You must have a positive attitude and enthusiasm for Boston University and civic responsibility.

Commitment

The various summer positions offered by the CSC have various commitments throughout the spring semester and during the summer. Please read the pages of the Information Packet for the exact expectations.

For the Program Manager position, commitment includes several office hours and volunteer hours per week, along with a weekly staff meeting. More detailed information on exact time commitment will be available with the application posted in January 2010.
