PEP TRAINING - Affirming the Experiences of Transgender and Gender Non-Conforming Youth in Schools

We are seeing anti-transgender legislation attempting to regulate the use of public space by transgender individuals. We are even seeing the current administration trying to define transgender people out of existence. At the same time, we are seeing more and more young people boldly rejecting notions of binary gender and claiming their right to self-actualization. It is critical that young people are affirmed in this right, particularly within school environments. This workshop will offer information, strategies and tools for school-based social workers to nurture young people on their gender journey. Participants in the seminar will discuss gender identity in a historical context, learn LGBTQ terms and concepts, ground their learning in pertinent health inequity data, and finally, explore case discussions and design solutions for common challenges working with youth in school settings.
