Tips for staying cool in Boston’s summer weather

Studying at Boston University during the school year, students quickly discover that weather patterns in Massachusetts are unpredictable. We learn to layer our clothing and find ways to stay dry and warm. For eight months, we play a guessing game. Will it rain today, or perhaps snow? Should I wear a scarf or capris?

Now, there is less than two weeks before summer officially begins, indicating a more consistent forecast; HOT! Commonwealth Avenue transforms from a nippy, wind tunnel to a blistering, hot, strip of concrete. Luckily for you, there are many ways to stay cool without just staying in air conditioned doors.

Find your green spot on and around campus. If you live in Allston or West, cross the T tracks and head over to Brookline. This shaded haven is less than a mile away from campus. There you will discover parks, hidden pathways, ponds, and gardens. These are the perfect places to study or get up and active. If you live in Central, East, or South Campus, then plan to take your lunch break at the BU Beach. Another wooded location is the east side of Commonwealth Avenue. Here the B Line tracks end and shaded park walkway begins.

Wherever you happen to be on campus, try traveling their a different way. Take back roads instead of main ones. Those wind tunnels you avoided all school year will now be your best friends. We all know that places like the George Sherman Union, Mugar Library, and your current school/college have air conditioning, but don’t fear the heat. Explore the coolest parts of campus this summer. Try chilling with your co-workers and classmates in these chill spots. Even in the intense humidity, you can still be cool and be you.
