Fear of a Black President or A Witch Hunt?

Oh no, she didn’t! She didn’t want to, but she went there – in one of the big national newspapers, one columnist called us out. That animosity and certain frequent criticism of President O is because he’s a black guy in charge. Her column started a flood of commentary within big media. Even former President Jimmy Carter jumped in:

O has always been reluctant to jump into this conversation – during his campaign and now – but he had to see this coming? We all saw this behavior and argument coming — right?

Recently, the Dems and the Republicans had it out on this issue and ended up name calling, too. Congress spent its precious time rebuking and witch hunting. Some folk say all this conversation is unfair. That certain people have radicalized American politics by raising this issue – that any criticism of President O will be perceived as racist. That we need a conversation about the activities of the racial elephant in the society (and the rooms of the White House), but that these accusations, denials, and antics are not helping.

Today, during Coffee and Conversation, let’s talk about whether are not we’re scared of the black guy or searching for scapegoats when we’ve got more important things to figure out. I’ll be at the Howard Thurman Center, today, from 3-5 p.m. with plenty of cookies and coffee – you bring your cup and your conversation game. See you later.

Talk to Your Career Muse

kim1I’m going to be away this afternoon — visiting with alumni and parents on the West Coast.  No worry.  Kimberly DelGizzo — our new director of Career Services — and the Career Services crew, is taking the console.

This week, focus on your self.  Meet and greet folk at the University who hope they can jumpstart your thinking about what you might do.  They’ve got no mystical way to check out the future, but they do have the know-how to be a muse for how you can spend your time when you’re not doing the school thing — over a summer; during a break; after graduation.

This week, as part of Coffee and Conversation, give yourself the gift of thinking about an internship, quick jobs, and ways to test how you feel about certain work that could be what you do during your life.  Give yourself the gift of knowing — what you like, when to move on and how you know what’s right.

I hope you can do more than follow your interests.  Clarity about your personal purpose and bliss over your life’s work is a gift.  Choosing a major is a pretty easy decision — sticking to a major is more difficult.  I hope you receive the he gift of discovering your passion and knowing, well before you finish your experience at a university, what you can do with your life that makes you think and experience real joy.

Get a start.  Kimberly and the crew will be at the Howard Thurman Center from 3-5 p.m. this afternoon.  I’ll make sure they’ve got plenty of coffee and cookies.  You bring the conversation.  See you next week — can’t wait to hear about your hopes and dreams.

Coffee and Conversation — Kick off the Semester with a Summer Rewind

We’re back from summer chill and weekly Coffee and Conversation sessions are on – starting today.

We had great discussions last year – our conversations straddled race, politics, fashion, and art.  We talked about threats to the environment and perceived inequities in the way people obtain wealth. We argued about the country’s lack of policies regarding energy use, housing, and health care.  We’re concerned about how the country’s wealth was tossed.  We were both hopeful and dismayed about America’s political life – the role of young people in the election; proper separation of powers; prisons; torture; abuses of civil liberties; a country’s loss of it’s soul; and, corrupting influences in government.   We struggled to create rules for when a country should use force to solve problems but remained concern that we had no idea how to stop violence and killings in America, Rwanda, Darfur, and Burma.  And, we got jazzed about love, happiness, and beautiful things.

This semester, stay up on it – let us know when you see something of interest: a new trend; new business ideas; new insights; send me clips and other newsy, thought-provoking, pretty things.  We need discussion suggestions throughout the fall – send your ideas now.

I’ll see you later – the first gathering around good coffee and conversation is on Friday, September 4.  We’ll re-cap of summer doings.  I’ll bring the coffee and cookies, you bring your cup and the good conversation.
