Many students with visual disabilities are interested in having their textbooks and other course related materials in a Brailled format. At Boston University, a request for this accommodation is handled in the same manner as requests for other accommodations. If a student seeks the use of Brailled materials, their documentation must clearly support the need it. After a student's documentation has been reviewed and the recommendation has been approved, he or she should meet with a Disability Services' staff member to obtain additional information about obtaining materials in this format.
Boston University has a variety of resources for obtaining Brailled materials. If an item is not already available, arrangements will be made to have the requested items Brailled at no cost to the student.
Procedures for Requesting Brailled Materials
- Students seeking Brailled materials must be approved for this accommodation.
- Students requesting Brailled materials must submit a complete list of the items they are seeking to the Office of Disability Services. This list should include:
- complete title
- author or authors (editor if applicable)
- edition or publishing date
- ISBN number (if possible)
- Disability Services will contact various sources to check the materials availability.
- If the book or material is available, the items will be ordered and delivered directly to Disability Services.
- If the book or material is not available, arrangements will be made to Braille the requested items at no charge to the student.
- If materials are to be brailled, students must also submit a copy of the course syllabus associated with each request.
- Disability Services will notify students as soon as the Brailled materials are available.
Please be aware that while many of these collections are extensive, the materials being sought may not be available. If the requested items are not readily available, Disability Services will arrange to have them Brailled for the student at no charge. To make arrangements to Braille materials, students must contact Disability Services and may have to provide a syllabus of the class for which materials will be Brailled.
It is important to note that Brailling requests take time to arrange and are subject to delay. Students are encouraged to place requests as soon as possible. Although Disability Services works to minimize delays, it may take time for Brailling to be completed. Many times materials are available one or two chapters or sections at a time in accordance with the syllabus provided with the request.
Some materials may also be available in other alternate formats. This option will be discussed on an individual basis as students are approved for this accommodation.
