ASL Interpreter Services & C.A.R.T. Services

Boston University provides students who are Deaf and hard of Hearing with ASL Interpreters and C.A.R.T. Services as applicable for both academic and non-academic purposes.
  • Academic purposes include (but are not limited to):
    • Classroom lectures
    • Course related discussions
    • Academic based internships
  • Non-Academic purposes may include (but are not limited to):
    • Student activities & programming
    • Sports and athletic involvement
    • Special events on the BU campus
Please Note:
It is of the utmost importance that students inform the Coordinator of Services for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing of any request for services at the first available opportunity. There are limited numbers of service providers available and a high demand for this service throughout the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Requests placed with minimal notice may result in either no or only partial services being available.

Procedures for Students to Request Interpreter & C.A.R.T. Services for Regular Academic Coursework

  1. Requests must be placed with the Office of Disability Services [specifically the Coordinator of Services for Deaf and Hard of Hearing] as soon as possible after the student has registered for classes.
  2. Students must supply a copy of their course schedule.
  3. Requests MUST include the following information [most of this information will be included in the students schedule]:
    • Course name, number & section [ex. CAS MA113 A1- Basic Statistics]
    • Faculty member(s) [i.e. who is teaching the course]
    • Day(s) of the week the course meets
    • Location of course(s) [including building name, street address, and room number]
    • Service providers preferred by the student or those the the student wishes not to be assigned (if applicable)
  4. Students must provide personal contact information [eMail, AIM, TTY] for the purpose of confirming service arrangements.
  5. Students must IMMEDIATELY inform the Coordinator of any changes to requests or cancellations

Procedures for Students to Request Interpreter & C.A.R.T. Services for All Other (nonacademic) Purposes

  1. Requests must be placed with the Office of Disability Services [specifically the Coordinator of Services for Deaf and Hard of Hearing] as soon as possible after the student has made a determination of their needs.
  2. Requests MUST include the following information:
    • Day(s) of the week and/or Date(s) of the request
    • Beginning and Ending time of the assignment [please be as accurate as possible]
    • Location of assignment [including building name, street address, and room number]
    • Names of participants, if applicable [examples of this include guest speakers, professors, coaches, etc.]
    • Description of the event [name of the event, reason for the meeting, agenda, etc.]
    • Service providers preferred by the student or those the the student wishes not to be assigned (if applicable)
  3. Students must provide personal contact information [eMail, AIM, TTY] for the purpose of confirming service arrangements.
  4. Students must IMMEDIATELY inform the Coordinator of any changes to requests or cancellations.
