Vegetarian/Vegan

At Boston University, we don’t believe it’s enough simply to offer some vegetarian and vegan options. We insist that they be plentiful, delicious, nutritious, and creative—and available throughout the day at every meal. You’ll find these options in all our residential dining rooms and retail locations, as well as our kosher dining facility. In fact, 80% of the items in our residence menu cycle are vegetarian-friendly, from vegan whole wheat pancakes to vegan pizzas. That’s why BU was recently ranked among the top 16 vegetarian-friendly schools in America on Peta2.com, PETA’s youth division website.

Here are some of the ways we make vegetarian and vegan dining easy and varied:

  • All non-meat and non-dairy soups are made with vegan stocks.
  • All rice served as a side dish is prepared using vegan stocks.
  • Tofu scrambles are available for breakfast at all residential dining rooms at the omelet station.
  • 2 types of beans are available at the salad bar in residential dining rooms at all times.
  • The burrito bar always has beans as an option.
  • Tofutti is available as a spread at all residential dining rooms and at Rhett’s for bagels.
  • All grill stations serve vegan burgers and hot dogs on request.
  • Vegan cream cheese is available for bagels.
  • Our salad bars contain many vegan-friendly items, including tofu and several varieties of beans for extra protein.
  • One-third of our salad dressings are vegan.
  • Our Jamba Juice station in the Union Court has many vegan-friendly smoothie flavors.
  • We use Smart Balance™ or oil instead of butter for sauteing vegetables as side dishes.
  • Vegetarian ice cream is offered at Warren Towers and the Fresh Food Company at West Campus that is Lactose Free.
  • We partner with student groups throughout the year to create exciting vegan and vegetarian dining events.
