Research

Research is an integral part of the mission at Boston University Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine (GSDM). Through scholarship, creativity, dedication, hard work, and commitment our investigators shape the future of dental medicine and dental education. Please visit the Research website for more information on collaborations, grants, and upcoming conferences.

Research teams are diverse and comprise faculty, undergraduate and graduate dental students, and residents, as well as PhD students and post-doctoral fellows. The scope of research at GSDM is broad, spanning areas of basic, clinical, public health, and translational sciences.

Investigators study basic metabolic processes and signaling pathways in development and disease, including inflammatory disorders and cancer; genetics, cell biology, and biochemistry of parasites and of oral and gastrointestinal microbes in health and disease; stem cell biology and oral tissue regeneration; public health issues related to periodontal disease progression, community health, smoking cessation, geriatrics and underserved populations; biomaterials; and different aspects of maxillofacial trauma. Research funding derives from grants and contracts provided through federal and non-federal sources.
