On May 2, 2012, Dee Gulis DMD 12 and Rachel Lukas DMD 13 headed to Dorchester to work with Habitat for Humanity. GSDM Increases BU Relay for Life Participation with Two Teams
The BU Relay for Life took place on April 14 and 15 at the BU Track and Tennis Center. GSDM participated for the fourth year in a row, this time with so many people involved they needed two teams. The teams, comprised of 48 students, faculty, staff, and friends total, participated in the overnight event to raise money for the American Cancer Society. CHP Tells Participants, “You Go Girl!”
On April 5, 2012 CHP Oral Health Promotion Director Kathy Lituri, Lindzy Goodman DMD 14, and Tayo Odusanwo DMD 13 volunteered at Mother Caroline Academy, an all-girls school, grades 5-8, in Roxbury. As volunteers they presented a whole day of health and wellness called, “You Go Girl,” to the students. The GSDM Chapter of the American Student Dental Association (ASDA), in collaboration with CHP Oral Health Promotion Director Kathy Lituri, held its annual Give Kids a Smile event at the Yawkey Boys and Girls Club of Roxbury on March 23. Fourth-year Students Ignite Interest in Global Health
A motivational luncheon presentation was hosted by Extramural Programs on April 6. The luncheon was led by Assistant Director of Extramural Programs Kathy Held and featured testimonials from fourth-year DMD students who have traveled on an international elective externship in the last year. These students visited Guatemala, Honduras, Haiti, Panama, Nicaragua, and Mexico to provide oral health outreach in a wide variety of settings. ADSO Teams Up With Harvard to Support Healthy Kids Festival
The BU Chapter of the Asian Dental Student Organization (ADSO) teamed up with the Harvard Chapter to provide oral health outreach at the Healthy Kids Festival on March 21. The festival was sponsored by the Children’s Museum and ADSO also worked with CHP Oral Health Promotion Director Kathy Lituri to coordinate their efforts. Schweitzer Fellow Dhara Shah DMD 13 Creates Dental Initiative
Dhara Shah DMD 13 is working with mentor and Director of School-Based Programs Corinna Culler to create a dental initiative from the ground up at Early Intervention’s Harvard, Massachusetts location starting this May. The proposed project is supported by a Schweitzer Fellowship Shah received this month. The Early Intervention organization offers supportive services at sites throughout Massachusetts to children up to three years old who have special needs. Inspired By First Trip, Katy Bednar DMD 12 Returns to Guatemala
Katy Bednar DMD 12 enjoyed her mission trip with Dentistry for All (DFA) to Comitancillo, Guatemala last Fall so much that she returned to Guatemala—this time El Remate—with DFA in March. Bednar traveled with DFA March 8 through the 19, which was the third week of a five-week Spring DFA mission trip.
