Entering DMD Student Requirements
Offers of admission into the DMD program are provisional, based on completion of all acceptance and enrollment requirements. These requirements include, but are not limited to, receipt of a satisfactory criminal background history report, satisfactory dean’s certification, completion of all prerequisites, and official degree-conferring transcript.
Acceptance Confirmation and Deposit
To hold a space in the incoming class, an accepted applicant must submit a nonrefundable $3,000 tuition deposit. The tuition deposit is applied to the student’s account toward the first semester of enrollment. Accepted applicants also must submit an Acceptance Confirmation form, a signed statement of their intention to enroll.
Starting in April, AADSAS compares lists of deposited, accepted applicants at participating dental schools. Should an applicant deposit at more than one school, the admissions offices will be informed of the names of overlapping students.
Submission of a completed Dean’s Certification form is required following acceptance. The entering student completes the top portion of the form and then provides the form to the dean of their undergraduate institution for completion.
Official Degree-Conferring Transcript
All accepted applicants are required to submit an official degree-conferring transcript indicating the date of the conferred, earned baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university in the USA or Canada. The official, final transcript must be submitted prior to matriculation. Applicants who hold more than one degree must submit a transcript from each academic program.
Criminal Background Check
Boston University participates in an arrangement with ADEA AADSAS and Certiphi® Screening Inc. for criminal background checks of accepted applicants. Prior to conducting a criminal background check, Certiphi requires the authorization of the individual under review. The Admissions Committee will review the record of each accepted applicant prior to entry into the dental school curriculum. In case of evidence of criminal history, an applicant may be deemed ill-suited for a dental program, in which case an offer of admission may be rescinded. Review of criminal background check reports is on a case-by-case basis.
Medical History and Immunization History
All enrolling students submit mandatory health and immunization information to Student Health Services. All dental students must be in clinical compliance status as determined by Boston University Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine, Boston University Student Health Services, and state and local requirements.
The Commonwealth of Massachusetts requires all health care students to be immunized against hepatitis B or provide serologic proof of immunity. Hepatitis B immunization requires a three-dose regimen of vaccine, which must be completed prior to matriculation. Evidence of inoculation (all three doses) must be provided at matriculation.
International Student Documentation for Visa Application
Following enrollment confirmation, accepted foreign nationals submit personal and financial documentation to Admissions. The Boston University International Students & Scholars Office (ISSO) then produces the appropriate document to enable entering international students to apply for a student visa.
BU Web Account
Entering students will be given instructions on creating a Boston University web account. The Boston University web account and Boston University email account are required for a variety of important processes and should be set up as soon as available.
Boston University Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine holds mandatory orientation sessions during the first week of the program. Orientation includes administrative sessions, health and safety training, library research guidance, academic expectations, and information on resources and programs.
