Medical Insurance (returning students)
Please note that all students are automatically enrolled in the Boston University Student PLUS Plan each year.
Returning Students Not Previously on Medical Insurance
Massachusetts state law requires that all students participate in a qualifying medical insurance plan during their enrollment. Students can either purchase medical insurance coverage through BU or enroll in a comparable plan on their own. BU offers a plan through Aetna Student Health. View detailed insurance cost information.
Returning Students Needing Dependent Coverage
Students may enroll their eligible* dependents in the Student BASIC Plan only. Dependent Enrollment is for the current policy year only and does not automatically roll over to the next policy year.
*Eligible dependents are the insured student’s lawful spouse and unmarried dependent children under 19 years of age who reside with, and are fully supported by, the covered student.
Waive the BU Insurance Plan
A student must have a qualifying U.S.-based medical insurance plan. To waive the plan offered by BU, follow the next three steps:
- Compare the Aetna Student Medical Insurance Plus Plan to your own insurance plan. If your insurance plan is comparable please proceed to the next step. If your insurance plan is not comparable, you must participate in the plan offered by Boston University.
- Waive the insurance. Electronically waive BU’s insurance through the Student Link. Click on the tab “money matters” and then select “medical insurance.” Once waived, your insurance charge will be removed from your student account. Please note: you may waive BU’s medical insurance plan until September 30, 2011.
- Adjust your invoice and mail payment by the payment deadline.
Qualifying Events: You may also enroll if you have had a recent involuntary loss of coverage. You may change from individual to family, if a spouse or child has had a recent qualifying life event.
Qualifying events include: a new baby, marriage, or involuntary loss of coverage. Documentation of the qualifying event must be presented at the time of enrollment. Students should always contact Student Accounting to make these types of changes, as they will be the ones to send notice to Aetna and require the documentation.
