Medical Insurance (new students)
Massachusetts state law requires that all students participate in a qualifying medical insurance plan during their enrollment. Students can either purchase medical insurance coverage through BU or enroll in a comparable plan on their own. BU offers a plan through Aetna Student Health. Please click here for insurance costs.
Waive the BU HI plan
A student must have a qualifying U.S.-based medical insurance plan. To waive the plan offered by BU, follow the next three steps:
- Compare the Aetna Student Health Insurance (HI) Plus Plan to your own insurance plan. If your insurance plan is comparable please proceed to the next step. If your insurance plan is not comparable, you must participate in the plan offered by Boston University.
- Waive the insurance. Electronically waive BU’s insurance through the Student Link. Click on the tab “money matters” and then select “medical insurance.” Once waived, your insurance charge will be removed from your student account. Please note: you may waive BU’s medical insurance plan until September 30, 2012.
- Adjust your invoice and mail payment by the payment deadline.
Qualifying Events: You may also enroll if you have had a recent involuntary loss of coverage. You may change from individual to family, if a spouse or child has had a recent qualifying life event. Qualifying events include: a new baby, marriage, or involuntary loss of coverage. Documentation of the qualifying event must be presented at the time of enrollment.
Dependents
Students may enroll their eligible* dependents in the Student BASIC Plan only. Dependent Enrollment is for the current policy year only and does not automatically roll over to the next policy year.
*Eligible dependents are the insured student’s lawful spouse and unmarried dependent children under 19 years of age who reside with, and are fully supported by, the covered student.
