APRIL 2016!

The Office of Global and Population Health and the Office of Alumni Relations has arranged several ways for all of us to join forces, as individuals and/or in large and small groups, to make April 2016 Global Days of Service the best yet for GSDM. Together we can make a real impact and help to create a new chapter in GSDM’s proud 53 years of history and service.

Please read below for information on the GSDM events and collection drives. These GSDM Global Days of Service events are listed on the Boston University Global Days of Service website and although they are primarily intended for GSDM students, faculty, staff, alumni, and their families and friends, all are welcome!

What is The Greater Boston Food Bank? The Greater Boston Food Bank (GBFB) is the largest hunger relief organization in New England and among the largest food banks in the country. Last year, GBFB distributed more than 54 million pounds of food, enough to provide healthy meals to as many as 545,000 people. They are committed to increasing their food distribution in 2016 to provide at least ONE MEAL A DAY to every person in need in eastern Massachusetts. The GBFB works to acquire, store, organize and distribute food through local food pantries, community meal programs, homeless and residential shelters, youth programs, senior centers, and day-care centers embedded in communities throughout the nine counties of eastern Massachusetts.  Since 2009, GBFB has operated out of a state-of-the-art, 117,000 square foot food distribution facility, the Yawkey Distribution Center, located in the Newmarket section of Boston.  For more information, see Greater Boston Food Bank.

What you’ll be doing: Groups who volunteer receive a customized, educational and team-building experience, while sorting and packing food for those in need. Most volunteers work in our warehouse inspecting, sorting, and packing food and grocery products. While a few tasks require the ability to lift a 30-pound box, most tasks require the ability to stand and inspect products for 2 – 3 hours.

Relay for Life

Location: Boston University Track and Tennis Center, 100 Ashford St., Boston (Charles River Campus)

What is Relay for Life?   The American Cancer Society Relay for Life movement symbolizes hope and our shared goal to end a disease that threatens the lives of so many people we love.  This is our opportunity to honor cancer survivors, remember those we have lost, and raise funds and awareness to fight back and help end cancer forever.  Relay for Life is an organized, overnight community fundraising walk where teams camp out and take turns walking around a track.  Food, games and activities provide entertainment and build camaraderie.  It is a wonderful family-friendly environment for the entire community.  Since this is a team event, individual participants are not required to be there the entire time; but because it’s so much fun, you’ll find it hard to leave!  More information about Boston University’s Relay for Life can be found here:  Relay for Life of Boston University.  For those of you not in Boston, more information on Relay for Life Worldwide can be found here:  Relay for Life Worldwide.

What will we be doing?  We will be participating in the 12-hour walk/campout at the Track and Tennis Center.   We will have an Oral Cancer booth set up, along with dental trivia, games, t-shirts and much more!

Cradles to Crayons — The Giving Factory

Friday, April 22, 2016 – Three spots left!

About The Giving Factory?  In 2014, 30,000 volunteers rolled up their sleeves in The Giving Factory at Cradles to Crayons.  Adults as old as 85 and kids as young as 5 came together to help make a difference in the lives of children living in low-income and homeless situations across the State of Massachusetts.  Through the help of these volunteers, Cradles to Crayons provided more than 100,000 children with the items they needed most.

Number of volunteers needed: 30

(All children present during a volunteer shift must be at least 5 years old.  Volunteers under 18 years old must have a chaperone and a signed waiver form with them when they volunteer.)

What you’ll be doing:  Volunteers will receive a short introduction to Cradles to Crayons, which includes a bit of history and a brief orientation on how their model works.  Volunteers are then assigned to project areas, where a staff member will introduce the project and work with the group to answer any questions throughout the shift.

St. Francis House

About St. Francis House?  St. Francis House is the largest day shelter in Massachusetts. Located in the heart of downtown Boston, St. Francis House serves more than 600 poor and homeless men and women a day, 365 days a year. Our basic, rehabilitative, and housing services overlap and build on one another to provide guests with continuous and comprehensive care.

What you’ll be doing:  Volunteers will be preparing and serving breakfast for the guests at St. Francis House.

Our programs provide on-the-job training for those seeking to become financially independent and introduce young people to the power of cooking from scratch and making other healthy lifestyle decisions. Haley House Soup Kitchen

About Haley House Soup Kitchen?  The Haley House Soup Kitchen prepares and serves made-from-scratch breakfast for men of all ages (homeless or food insecure) -Monday – Friday: 5:30 – 9:00 am and Sunday: 9:00 am – 12:00 pm and an Elder Lunch for men and women over 55 on Tuesday & Thursday, 12:00 pm – 2:30 pm and on Sunday from 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm.

The home-cooked meals bring strangers together and foster friendship and meaningful community.  Our meals are creatively composed of food donated by local organizations. Members of the Live-In Community coordinate daily menus with the help of volunteers from local colleges, neighbors, and Soup Kitchen guests. Since 1966, over 2 million meals have been served in our bustling kitchen, entirely through the generosity of volunteers.

The Elder Meal has become an intimate community of friends that have shared similar lives and stories of homelessness and loneliness in the inner city. While new guests are warmly welcomed, a core group comes to eat and visit. Meals are served at the table fostering conversation, sharing and creating a sense of family.
