GSDM Participates in BAHEC Expo

The Boston Area Health Education Center (BAHEC) held their annual Youth to Health Careers Summer Enrichment Program Health Career Expo on Friday, July 14, 2017 in the Hiebert Lounge. This annual event is aimed at connecting Boston adolescents (9-12 graders) who are interested in exploring health careers with a variety of health professionals representing a broad range of career fields. The Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine was represented by both our Office of Research and Office of Global and Population Health.

The day began when Anthony Crosson, Director of the Boston Area Health Education Center at the Boston Public Health Commission, welcomed all students and healthcare professionals. Following his remarks, Dr. Philomena Assante, Director of the BAHEC Division of Child and Adolescent Health, and Dr. Hee-Young Park, Director of the Graduate Medical Science Program at Boston University School of Medicine, took to the podium to address the audience and discuss future roles in healthcare.

Following the welcoming remarks, students were able to circulate the room to visit various stations and learn more about the various fields of study in healthcare. The three Boston University Medical Campus Schools, School of Medicine, School of Public Health, and the Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine (GSDM) were all represented.

The GSDM station was staffed by; Afaf Hourani, Assistant Director of Predoctoral Research; Kendrick Smaellie, Administrative Assistant for the Center for Clinical Research; Kathy Held, Director of the Global Initiatives Program and Assistant Professor in the Department of General Dentistry; and Dee Devlin, Clinical Instructor in the Department of Health Policy and Health Services Research. A fun activity at the GSDM station was the creation of a spider chart, where the students were able to see how potential risk factors for cavities can relate to salivary pH.

The final component of the Expo was a networking session, where students in groups of six met with professionals from all healthcare disciplines to learn more about their respective fields of study and practice.
