Science Day March 16, 2017: Dr. Frank Hu to Deliver Keynote Address
Dr. Frank Hu will be the keynote speaker at Science Day at the Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine (GSDM) on March 16, 2017. Science Day is an annual event to showcase research from dental students/residents and fellows, as well as to encourage research at GSDM as a whole.
This year’s keynote speaker, Dr. Hu, is an expert in obesity epidemiology and will be presenting on “Curbing the Global Epidemic of Obesity: From Science to Policy.” Dr. Hu is chair of the Department of Nutrition, a Professor of Epidemiology at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, and a Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School and Brigham and Women’s Hospital. Dr. Hu received his M.D. from Tongji Medical University in China, and went on to earn both his M.P.H. and Ph.D. from the University of Illinois at Chicago. Dr. Hu’s lecture will take place from 1pm to 2pm in the Hiebert Lounge in the BU School of Medicine Instructional Building.
Dr. Hu serves as the Co-Director of the Program in Obesity Epidemiology and Prevention at Harvard and Director of Boston Nutrition and Obesity Research Center Epidemiology and Genetics Core. He has published over 800 papers and reviews, as well as a textbook on the epidemiology of obesity. His research has focused on diet/lifestyle, metabolic, and genetic determinants of obesity, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular disease (CVD). He is the Principal Investigator of the diabetes component of the Nurses’ Health Study. He also leads two NIH-funded projects to study Mediterranean dietary interventions, plasma metabolites, and risk of diabetes and CVD in the PREDIMED trial. Dr. Hu’s group has conducted detailed analyses of many dietary and lifestyle factors and risk of diabetes and CVD, including sugar-sweetened beverages, coffee, red meat, saturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids, iron, and dietary patterns.
In 2010, Dr. Hu received the Kelly West Award for Outstanding Achievement in Epidemiology from the American Diabetes Association. He has served on the Institute of Medicine (IOM) Committee on Preventing the Global Epidemic of Cardiovascular Disease, the AHA/ACC Obesity Guideline Expert Panel, and the 2015 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee, USDA/HHS. He is currently on the editorial board of Lancet Diabetes and Endocrinology, Diabetes Care, and Clinical Chemistry. Dr. Hu was elected to the National Academy of Medicine (formerly the IOM) in 2015.
Science Day will be held on Thursday, March 16, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. This event is open to all members of the GSDM community, and includes poster and oral presentations as well as a dental vendor exhibition.
