Dr. Sok-Ja Janket of the Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine (GSDM) attended the 10th International Congress on Autoimmunity in Leipzig, Germany, this April. At this conference, which attracted over 2,000 attendees from around the world, Dr. Janket chaired an inaugural session dedicated to integument and oral mucosal diseases in autoimmunity.

This new session was created by Dr. Yehuda Shoenfeld, President of the Congress and a Professor at Tel Aviv University. He invited Dr. Janket to co-chair the session to discuss the role of oral mucosa in various autoimmune diseases thanks to her expertise on the topic. Previously, Dr. Janket had contributed a chapter to Dr. Shoenfeld’s book, “Infection and Autoimmunity.”

The session had a high attendance rate and was well-received. It included the following presentations; “Hepatitis-C Virus-related immune-mediated orofacial disorders” by Dr. Marco Carrozzo, Professor of Oral Medicine, Newcastle University, United Kingdom; “Clinico-pathological features of oral Lichen Planus” by Dr. Sook Bin Woo, Associate Professor in the Department of Oral Medicine, Infection, and Immunity, Harvard School of Dental Medicine, USA; and “Oro- pharyngeal blistering diseases” by Dr. Michele Davide Mignogna, Professor of Dentistry Diseases, Department of Odontostomatological Sciences, University of Naples, Italy.

Dr. Sok-Ja Janket is a Research Associate Professor at GSDM, where she has been a faculty member since 2004. She previously presented at the 9th International Congress on Autoimmunity in Nice, France, on prediction modeling for Type 1 diabetes. Her presentation, “How to predict Type 1 Diabetes or any Autoimmune Disease,” was given during the Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus – Diagnostics and Therapy session.

“It was a very well organized congress and the toughest task was choosing one of many superb and simultaneous presentations to attend,” said Dr. Janket.
