The Muslim Students Association (MSA) sponsored an Eid Celebration dinner at Boston University Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine (GSDM) on Tuesday, August 12, 2014, in the GSDM Cafeteria. The event served as an opportunity to unite students, faculty, and staff on the medical campus.

In observance of Ramadan, many Muslims spent the month of July fasting from dawn till dusk. This year, Ramadan began on June 28 and ended on July 27. During this time, Muslims observing Ramadan abstained from food and drink during daylight hours. This included several GSDM students and faculty. Eid is a celebration marking the end of Ramadan and the end of the month of fasting.

Students and faculty, both Muslim and non-Muslim, joined together in the GSDM cafeteria for a feast of hummus, chicken, rice, as well as traditional Arab sweets often referred to as ‘konafa.’ The meal was catered by Black Seed Café.

“As an organization, we are committed to building a network of professionals who are dedicated to making a difference within the communities of Boston while striving to eliminate misconceptions within our profession,” said Amr Aly DMD 17 and MSA President. “Our goal is to develop a bond, between both Muslim and non-Muslim individuals alike, and we’d love for everyone to become a part of our community here at the Muslim Student Association on the Boston University Medical Campus!”

With around 70 participants, including Dean Jeffrey W. Hutter, Director of Diversity & Multicultural Affairs Dr. Larry Dunham, Assistant Dean of Students Dr. Joseph Calabrese, and Assistant Dean of Diversity and Multicultural Affairs at Boston Medical School Dr. Alexander Norbash, organizers deemed the event a success and are looking forward to expanding the MSA.

There will be another Eid Celebration dinner coming up on Friday, October 24 from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Hiebert Lounge. The event is being hosted by the GSDM Muslim Student Association and Boston University School of Medicine Diversity & Multicultural Affairs. The event is $12 per person and will have Halal Catering provided by Black Seed Café.
