Dr. Joseph Calabrese Made Honorary Alpha Omega Member

During the organization’s 2014 Senior Brunch Sunday, March 30, the Boston Alumni chapter of the Alpha Omega International Dental Fraternity (AO) inducted Dr. Joseph Calabrese as an honorary member.

Dr. Calabrese has a longstanding relationship with GSDM’s student groups, including AO, as Assistant Dean of Students at the School.

“It is a tremendous honor to be inducted,” said Dr. Calabrese, “because of all that Alpha Omega stands for and all that its members do for each other and the community.”

Also honored were the graduating student members from all three Boston area member schools: Boston University Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine (GSDM), Harvard University School of Dental Medicine, and Tufts University School of Dental Medicine. Each graduate received an AO diploma. New students and faculty were inducted to AO as well, including: Drs. Charilaos Asikis, Angela Cancado, Anu Deshmukh, Margaret Howard, and David Russell.

AO student members voted to give the Teacher Appreciation Award to Dr. David Dano. Dano is the Faculty Advisor for AO at GSDM and a Group Practice Leader at the School.

“I congratulate Dr. Calabrese on becoming an honorary member of Alpha Omega, an acknowledgement that he truly deserves” said Dean Jeffrey W. Hutter. “I also want to applaud Dr. David Dano for his ongoing efforts as faculty advisor to the GSDM chapter and his recognition by students with the Teacher Appreciation Award. And, last but not least, welcome to all the new student and faculty members of Alpha Omega and best wishes to the graduating members.”

That same weekend, on Friday, March 28, Alpha Omega International President Dr. Avi Wurman visited our School for a tour led by Dr. Calabrese and lunch with students and faculty. Dr. Wurman presented a donation for the School’s new building on behalf of the Alpha Omega Boston Alumni chapter.

Alpha Omega is the oldest international dental organization, founded in 1907 by students to fight discrimination in dental schools. AO’s mission includes education and philanthropy. The organization is responsible for creating both dental schools in Israel, the Hebrew University-Hadassah School of Dentistry and the Tel Aviv University Maurice and Gabriela Goldschleger School of Dental Medicine.
