Members of the Boston University Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine (GSDM) chapter of the American Student Dental Association (ASDA) welcomed first year DMD students at their annual Big Brother Big Sister (BB/BS) lunch on Wednesday, August 21, 2013 in the Hiebert Lounge.

First year DMD students are paired up with second, third, and forth year students, who volunteer as “big brothers” and “big sisters,” mentoring the new class. At this year’s event, 70 new students and 90 upperclassmen attended the event.

Everyone enjoyed pizza and conversation, with the new students asking the seasoned upperclassmen questions on what to expect during their first year.

Event organizers were: Chris Connell DMD 15, Marina Gonchar DMD 14, Marissa Kobewka DMD 15, Antonio Maceda DMD 15, Mike Mayr DMD 16, Jessica Metcalfe DMD 15, Ryan Pasiewicz DMD 15, Jay Patel DMD 14, Alyssa Peracchio DMD 16, and Amrita Sandhu DMD 15.

“Overall we had a great turnout of both first years and upperclassmen, over 160 students,” said Mike Mayr. “The friendships made through this program will hopefully continue throughout dental school, and beyond!”

Assistant Dean of Students Dr. Joseph Calabrese was pleased by the continued success of the BB/BS program. “This is a great event to acclimate the new DMD students to our School. Thanks to the upper class volunteers and the planning committee for their hard work.”
