On Monday, July 29, 2013, DMD 17 and AS 15 students began their first week at Boston University Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine (GSDM). The students spent time meeting GSDM faculty, staff, classmates, and getting acclimated with the School.

On Monday, students signed in and mingled over breakfast in the Hiebert Lounge. Breakfast was followed by a welcome from Dean Jeffrey W. Hutter. Dean Hutter introduced students to the subsequent speakers: Dr. Joseph Calabrese, Assistant Professor in the Department of General Dentistry and Assistant Dean of Students; Dr. John Guarente, Clinical Associate Professor in General Dentistry and Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs; Dr. Celeste Kong, Professor and Associate Chair in the Department of General Dentistry; Dr. Cataldo Leone, Professor in the Departments of Periodontology and Molecular & Cell Biology and Associate Dean for Academic Affairs; Dr. Janet Peters, Associate Professor in the Department of General Dentistry and Faculty Liaison to the Advanced Standing Program; and Ms. Catherine Sarkis, Assistant Professor in the Department of Health Policy & Health Services Research and Assistant Dean for Admissions.

At the Welcome to GSDM luncheon that afternoon, Dean Hutter addressed the students again, presenting an overview of the DMD 17 and AS 15 classes in terms of educational background and geographic diversity. He then gave a brief description of the School, what to expect as they begin their dental education here, and welcomed them to GSDM.

“I wish you the best of success in your education and look forward to working closely with you during your time here, and in two or four years delivering your Doctor of Dental Medicine degrees at Commencement,” said Dean Hutter.

Dr. Calabrese and Ms. Sarkis passed around microphones so that faculty could introduce themselves, some of whom made jokes, lending a jovial touch to the proceedings.

Later that day, the students voted to select their scrub colors. The choices were: khaki, purple, and teal. The results were to be announced later that day at the Ice Cream Social and Student Organization Fair.

On Tuesday, students enjoyed a lunch sponsored by the Massachusetts Dental Society (MDS). The MDS speakers explained how their organization can be an asset to students in the present and future, providing networking opportunities and serving as an advocate on their behalf. Among the speakers were Dr. Justine Kelley, Chair of the Membership Committee at MDS; Frank Schiano CAS 01, DMD 06, AEGD 07, Chair of the MDS Boston Collaborative Group; MDS President Dr. Michael Wasserman; and MDS Executive Director Dr. Robert Boose.
