July 30, 2012

asp-town-200ASP Committee Co-Chairs Dr. John Guarente and Dr. Celeste Kong hosted the first Applied Strategic Plan (ASP) Town Hall Meeting at GSDM on Tuesday, July 23, 2012, at 11:30 a.m. ASP Implementation Team Leader Dr. Paula K. Friedman moderated the meeting. She welcomed attendees and thanked them for attending. Senior Project Manager Gurjinder Gill reviewed the ASP Implementation Summary table, which was in the ASP Motion Newsletter distributed at the meeting. Gill reported, “Of the 91 Integrated Action Plans (IAPs), 82 have been completed to date, which is great. Credit goes to the Goal Champions and to all of you here.”

Dr. Friedman addressed the group and said, “We are going from good to great and we are all here to change our School for the better. We are fortunate to have many of our Goal Champions here today to provide updates.”

Goal Champions in attendance at the first meeting included: Dr. Joseph Calabrese, Dr. Thomas Kilgore, Dr. Cataldo Leone, Dr. Carl McManama, Ms. Lori Brady, Mr. Tim McDonough, and Ms. Catherine Sarkis. Each Goal Champion spoke briefly about their respective goals and provided examples of initiatives that have already been completed, and in-progress and upcoming initiatives.

At the 11:30 a.m. meeting, Goal 2: Provide excellence in lifelong dental education and scholarship was discussed at length by Drs. Guarente and Kong and various faculty and staff in attendance. Results of the Curriculum Summits, including the future transition to a Group Practice Model, were discussed. Goal 1: Design and construct a new facility which supports our mission was also discussed at length. Tim McDonough fielded questions regarding the proposed new facility and how the facility may also meet future space needs of the entire Medical Campus. There were also some questions from the audience regarding advances in achieving Goal 8: Recruit, develop and retain excellent and diverse faculty and staff.

Dr. Guarente closed the meeting, “We are very pleased with the turnout and I encourage you to contact us with feedback about the new Town Hall meeting format. Our goal is to support a transparent process and provide a forum for questions and concerns about our ASP.”
