Josephine Verde DMD 13 Elected Representative of AAWD Board

July 23, 2012

Josephine Verde DMD 13, recipient of the Boston University Women’s Council Scholarship for the 2012–13 academic year and President of the Boston University Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine (GSDM) chapter of the American Association of Women Dentists (AAWD), has been elected senior student representative of the AAWD 2013 National board of directors.

“Ms. Verde is an excellent example of the dedicated, hard-working, and community-service minded dental professionals that we encourage all of our students to become,” said Dean Jeffrey W. Hutter. “On behalf of the entire GSDM community, I congratulate her on being elected to this leadership role. I am confident she will represent GSDM well.”

The mission of the AAWD is to become the recognized resource for connecting and enriching the lives of women dentists. First organized in 1892, the core undertakings of today’s AAWD include mentorship, networking for employment opportunities, and scientific exchange.

Verde has worked on several community service projects with the GSDM chapter of the AAWD. In 2011, she spearheaded a monthly community service initiative called “Women to Women,” which aims to improve the oral health of the women of Rosie’s Place, a sanctuary for poor and homeless women. In February 2012, she organized a clothing drive for Rosie’s Place with Asian Dental Student Organization (ADSO) President, Michelle Vo DMD 13.

In Verde’s new role as senior student representative for the AAWD 2013 National board of directors, she will be attending national meetings in Chicago, San Diego, and New Orleans. Overall, she will be able to expand her participation in the AAWD’s mission to enrich the lives of women in dental medicine.

Dr. Paula K. Friedman said, “As the faculty adviser to the GSDM Chapter of the American Association of Women Dentists, it gives me great pleasure to congratulate our current chapter President, Josephine Verde, on her election as a senior student representative to the AAWD 2013 National board of directors. The success of the GSDM chapter is a function of its leadership, and Josephine’s energy, enthusiasm, and vision were emblematic of the commitment of the AAWD members in fulfilling the mission of enriching lives of women dentists.” She continued, “We are very proud to have her representing us and the next generation of women dentists.”
