Dr. Mark Ferriero Honored with Award for Innovation in Education at John McCahan Day



mccahan-2012The Seventh Annual John McCahan Medical Campus Education Day was held on May 23, 2012 in the Hiebert Lounge. This annual event showcases educational innovation and scholarship at BUMC in honor of former Boston University School of Medicine Associate Dean of Academic Affairs Dr. John McCahan.

Director of Restorative Dentistry and Professor Dr. Celeste Kong and Clinical Associate Professor Dr. Andrea Maalouf represented GSDM on the planning committee. Wyatt Traina DMD 14 presented his poster titled, “Assessing Dental Students’ Attitudes and Knowledge about the Elderly.” Associate Dean for Strategic Initiatives Dr. Paula K. Friedman served as a mentor for Traina during his research.

GSDM Geriatric Dentistry Fellow Dr. Laura Kauffman and Dental Assistant Tiffany Setiono presented a poster for their research, also completed with guidance from Dr. Friedman and Dr. Thomas Perls of the New England Centenarian Study. The poster titled, “When Life Span Exceeds 100 Years: Assessing Oral Health Status of Centenarians,” was also recently awarded third place at the Annual Meeting of the Special Care Dentistry Association in Scottsdale, Arizona.

Also at Education Day, Dr. Mark Ferriero was presented with the GSDM Award for Innovation in Education, by Professor and Chair of General Dentistry Dr. Judith Jones. Dr. Jones said, “Mark is a master in our Simulation Learning Center. Since taking over the SLC, first time exam pass rates are now between 92 and 95 percent. The Board of Examiners were so impressed, they have invited him to become a Board Examiner.” Jones continued, “Mark is also a wonderful mentor of teaching. He gathers third and fourth year dental students to become teaching fellows.”
