Six GSDM Students Receive BU Women’s Council Scholarships
Kinjal N. Patel DMD 13, Winnie E. Saji DMD 15, Geetika Singh DMD 13, Europa Y. Yang DMD 13, Insun J.Y. Yoon DMD 13, and Josephine Verde DMD 13 were all recently named recipients of the Boston University Women’s Council (BUWC) Scholarship for the 2012-2013 academic year. As part of the scholarship, they will all receive a monetary award plus one year membership in the BUWC. The students were honored at a Council meeting held on April 17.
In 1939, as a memorial for Harriet Truxell Marsh, the BUWC established its first scholarship endowment fund to support BU women graduate students. Together with Fisk House, these scholarships remain the Women’s Council’s highest priority. Awarded to women who are enrolled in a full-time graduate degree program in any of the schools or colleges within BU, the scholarships give students more time to devote to their studies while they are here, and more time to dedicate to achieving their goals once they leave.
Associate Dean for Strategic Initiatives Dr. Paula K. Friedman recommended Verde for the scholarship. She said Verde made an excellent candidate because, “she exhibited enthusiasm and leadership in the BU Chapter of AAWD, was engaged in other extracurricular activities including volunteering at Rosie’s Place, and she organized an extremely successful clothing drive for the residents of Rosie’s Place.”
Dean Jeffrey W. Hutter added, “These six women are excellent examples of the dedicated, hard-working, and community-service minded dental professionals that we encourage all of our students to become. On behalf of the entire GSDM community, I congratulate them on being selected for this scholarship.”
