Ahmad Almehmadi PERIO 15 Recognized at BU Science & Engineering Research Symposium

Ahmad Almehmadi’s PERIO 15 research was selected as the winner of the GSDM Dean’s Award at the March 21, BU Science & Engineering Research Symposium. His poster was titled, “The Use of VWC2 Protein as a Novel Approach to Induce Bone Formation.” His research mentor was Associate Professor Dr. Yoshiyuki Mochida.

Almehmadi explains his research, “Bone loss is a major health problem that affects a large population in our community. Therefore a new regenerative approach is of main interest. In this study we investigated a newly discovered protein called von Willebrand factor C domain containing 2 protein (VWC2).”

He continued, “Our data demonstrated that VWC2 protein is present in bone forming cells and has the ability to increase bone formation in mouse bone tissue. Our data strongly indicate that this protein could be a potential therapeutic agent for bone loss.”

Dean Jeffrey W. Hutter commended Almehmadi saying, “Congratulations to Ahmad for receiving this well-deserved recognition. His research is very interesting and timely, and I’m happy to see it recognized on a University wide level.”
