In the case of the bio-defense laboratory now under construction in the South End - well, leave it to the mayor of a struggling city in upstate New York to point out that some of our fellow Athenians are looking a big, fat gift horse in the mouth.
“You’re fighting over it - and here we are begging for (new job) opportunities,” James Brown, mayor of Rome, N.Y., told the Herald last week. “People don’t want it (in Boston). So why...

Biolab lawsuit leads to new environmental Review

A more in-depth environmental review of the BioLab, currently being conducted by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and Boston University Medical Center (BUMC) as part of federal court proceedings, will consider the hypothetical risks of placing the BioLab in either Tyngsborough or Peterborough, N.H., according to court filings.

This environmental review will also examine several hypothetical worst-case scenarios that weren't addressed in previous reviews of the BioLab project. New worst-case scenarios considered will include the hypothetical infection of a laboratory worker with Ebola; the transportation of tick-born encephalitis; an aerosol event involving a hemorrhagic fever; and the use...

Boosting Careers, Building Community

As one of the largest employers in the city, Boston University currently has more than 350 jobs available on the Charles River and Medical Campuses and at Boston Medical Center. The University is looking to the local community to fill some of those spots.
An all-BU job fair is being held tomorrow on the Medical Campus, with employment and training specialists on hand to discuss the open positions with the area’s unemployed and underemployed. It is important for educators to facilitate this process.
Fanatical opponents of the Biosafety Lab in the South End believe otherwise. Their objective is for high school students and their families to reject admission to the university.

Operation: Over literature asserts, "It's time to stop being polite and hit BU where it hurts: their funding." The reasons they give for...

The BioLab is important for public health

The federal government recently completed the final review necessary on the BioLab at Boston University Medical Center and construction is underway. As a scientist who will work in this facility and as a resident of the South End, I am excited about the potential of this state-of-the-art facility and the prospect that it offers for the development of new vaccines and treatments for some of the most dangerous diseases we face.
The approval process for the lab has taken over three years. During this time many agencies at the local, state and federal government level have rigorously reviewed this project from...
