Student-led tours of the Charles River campus depart from the Admissions Office Reception Center at 121 Bay State Rd; call (617) 353-2300 or use the link below for tour times. Prospective students may also arrange lunch with a Boston University student and attend an undergraduate class.

BARNES & NOBLE AT BOSTON UNIVERSITY

660 Beacon Street

With five floors of books, insignia clothing and gifts, computer software, and school and dorm supplies, Barnes & Noble at Boston University offers the quality and selection that can only be found in a superstore. Browse through the enormous selection of books, relax in the street-level cafe, or meet a well-known author as part of the year-round Author Series.

BAY STATE ROAD

Reminiscent of turn-of-the-century life in Boston's Back Bay. The tree-lined promenade was home to many of Boston's most distinguished families. Bay State Road has been designated a Local Historic Area.

BOSTON UNIVERSITY ART GALLERY

855 Commonwealth Avenue

Showplace for many of the finest exhibitions of contemporary art in the region, the gallery brings a special focus to developments in twentieth-century American and regional art. The gallery is located on the first floor of the College of Fine Arts and is open Tuesday-Friday, 10 a. m.-5 p. m.; Saturday-Sunday 1-5 p.m. (September-May).

DANIEL L. MARSH CHAPEL

735 Commonwealth Avenue

The physical and spiritual center of the Charles River Campus, this interdenominational chapel is open to all from 8 a. m. to 10 p. m. on weekdays and Sundays. In the Chapel Plaza stands the University's tribute to its distinguished alumnus, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Inside, the chapel's limestone interior, enriched by oak pews and wood carvings, provides a warm setting for meditation and services. Downstairs, a small chapel and meeting rooms provide an inviting atmosphere for students, faculty, and staff.

GEORGE SHERMAN UNION

775 Commonwealth Avenue

The University's student center. Facilities include the Union Court dining areas, games room, lounges, study areas, television viewing areas, a ballroom, student organization offices, administrative offices, meeting rooms, and a convenience store. In the basement is a branch of the United States Post Office; and a bank is located in the Link.

HAROLD C. CASE PHYSICAL EDUCATION CENTER

285 Babcock Street

The University's athletic complex. Facilities include gymnasia, ice-skating rink, saunas, pool, dance studio, weight room/fitness room, indoor track and infield, tennis courts, volleyball courts, track, and multipurpose playing fields.

JUDSON BOARDMAN COIT OBSERVATORY

725 Commonwealth Avenue

The facility for the study of astronomy -- the "oldest of sciences" and the first science taught at the University. The observatory boasts a 6˝-inch refractor, a 12-inch reflector, and a 14-inch and several 8-inch Schmidt-Cassegrain telescopes. The observatory is free and open to the public every Wednesday evening (weather and visibility permitting). Call (617) 353-2630 after 5:30 p. m. for observing conditions.

MUGAR MEMORIAL LIBRARY

771 Commonwealth Avenue

The central research and study library of Boston University. The University's collection contains more than 2.1 million volumes in paper, 3.7 million volume equivalents in microform, and thousands of current journals.

PHOTONICS CENTER

8 St. Mary's Street

From femtosecond spectroscopy and quantum optics to virtual reality, Boston University's $80 million, 235,000 square-foot Photonics Center houses state-of-the-art laboratories devoted to developing new light-based technologies for industrial and consumer products. The center also includes teaching laboratories and classrooms for the College of Engineering and is home to a unique collection of light-based art. A self-guided tour of the center's art is available in the ninth-floor Photonics reception area.

HOWARD GOTLIEB ARCHIVAL RESEARCH CENTER 

771 Commonwealth Avenue

The University's manuscript and rare book repository. The collections include works and papers of Abraham Lincoln, Robert Frost, and Theodore Roosevelt. Among the many treasures to be found in Special Collections is the Twentieth Century Archives -- the papers of more than 1,600 public figures in literature, journalism, film, theatre, music, and diplomacy. The department is housed within Mugar Library, and exhibits are displayed regularly throughout the library.

THE CASTLE

225 Bay State Road

Once a private residence, now a focal point of the official social life of the University. The architecture and style of this mansion, completed in 1915, were inspired by the great manor houses of Tudor England.
