Located within Boston University’s new $225 million John Hancock Student Village—a 10-acre hub of activity designed to be the thriving center of student life and athletics—Agganis Arena is the state-of-the-art, multipurpose sports and entertainment center that opened in January 2005. A 290,000-square-foot premier venue with 6,300 seats for hockey and ice shows, the Arena is expandable to over 7,200 seats for concerts, sporting events, family shows, trade shows, and conferences.

A showplace for many of the finest exhibitions of contemporary art in the region, the gallery brings a special focus to developments in twentieth-and twenty-first-century American and regional art. The gallery is located on the first floor of the College of Fine Arts and is open Tuesday-Friday, 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.; and Saturday-Sunday, 1-5 p.m. (September through May). Complimentary admission to the gallery and all events.

Bay State Road
A number of University residence halls and faculty offices are located in brownstones along Bay State Road. Reminiscent of life in Boston's Back Bay at the turn of the last century, the tree-lined promenade was home to many of Boston's most distinguished families and has been designated a local historic district.

The Castle

The Castle, a graceful, vine-covered Tudor revival mansion built in 1905 by gothic author and Boston businessman William Lindsay, was acquired by BU in 1939. BU's fourth president, Daniel Marsh, and his family moved into the mansion and used it for entertaining. Today the Castle is available for functions, receptions, and conferences.

The physical and spiritual center of the Charles River Campus, this interdenominational chapel is open for prayer daily from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. In the Chapel Plaza stands the University's tribute to its distinguished alumnus, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Inside, the chapel's limestone interior, enriched by oak pews and wood carvings, provides a warm setting for silent meditation and worship for students, faculty, and staff.

The Fitness & Recreation Center offers over six acres of world-class equipment, programs, and services. Enjoy 18,000 square feet of fitness space, two pools, seven basketball and multi-use courts, a 35-foot -high climbing wall, an indoor track, seven multi-use rooms for classes, a dance theatre, and racquetball courts and squash courts. Hundreds of recreational courses are offered annually. Academic year hours: Monday-Thursday: 6 a.m. - 11 p.m.; Friday: 6 a.m. - 10 p.m.; Saturday and Sunday: 8 a.m. - 10 p.m.

The University's student center contains a Campus Convenience store, a U.S. Post office, banks and ATMs, Metcalf hall, an art gallery, conference areas, and dining areas including the Union Court and the Faculty/Staff Dining Room. The Dean of Students Office and BU Central - BU's late-night programming venue for comedians and bands - are also housed at the GSU.

The University's manuscript and rare book repository includes the works and papers of Martin Luther King, Jr., Robert Frost, Douglas Fairbanks, Jr., and W. Somerset Maugham, among many others. The center holds the papers of over 2,000 American and European individuals in the fields of literature, criticism, journalism, drama, music, film, civil rights, diplomacy, and national affairs.
