Concentration in Earth Sciences
The Earth Sciences concentration is intended to provide the student with a broad Earth Sciences background in preparation for graduate study or entry-level professional employment. A concentration in Earth Sciences requires the completion of 15 courses approved by the department, with a grade of C or better in each of the required courses. In addition, the student must pass an approved summer field course. For descriptions of the various courses offered by the Earth Sciences department, go to the Courses page.
Required Courses
- One 100-level: ES 101, 105, 140, 142, 144, or GE 104
- Three 200-300-level: 222, 301, 317, 331, 333, and whichever of 302 or 351 is not taken below.
- Two 400-500-level: (exclusive of 401, 402, 491, 492)
- Field Course: ES 500 (summer) or other approved field course
- Three required: ES 302 or 351, 360, 371
- For research experience, students are encouraged to enroll in: ES 401, 402; ES 491, 492
Required Related Courses
- Mathematics requirement: MA 123 and MA 124, or MA 127, or MA 129
- Chemistry requirement: CH 101 and CH 102, or CH 111, CH 112
- Physics requirement: PY 211 and PY 212, or PY 251, PY 252
- Note: BI 107 may, in some circumstances, be used to satisfy Earth Sciences concentration requirements with prior approval of the Director of Undergraduate Studies.
