A Message from the Chair:

As one of the largest departments of its kind in the country, the Boston University Biomedical Engineering Department is a model of interdisciplinary research and education. In the past year, our graduate program continued its climb up the U.S. News & World Report rankings and is now ranked 6th in the country. Our undergraduate program is also near the top, ranked 8th. We remain the only department in the country to have received a Whitaker Foundation Leadership Award and a Coulter Foundation Translational Partnership Award.

In 2006-2007, our 32 primary faculty attracted over $17 million in research funding, published 185 articles and gave 202 invited talks around the world. Our faculty includes three National Academy of Sciences members, two MacArthur "genius" award winners, and 15 fellows of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering. As a diverse array of specialists in a number of biomedical research areas, the BME faculty is driven by translating biomedical science and research into new applications that make a positive impact on society.

Our students learn both the fundamental principles of life science applications, and life-long skills in engineering, communication and independent design and research. Small student-faculty ratios at both the graduate and undergraduate levels create a strong sense of collegiality between professor and student.

Please browse our pages to learn more about our students, faculty, degree programs and research. You will find a department that offers world-class training and research in biomedical engineering.
