Fellowships within BME

Fellowships typically provide support for the first academic year, after which students work in a particular laboratory as a Research Assistant.

  • Departmental Fellowships are provided by a Whitaker Leadership Award and supplemented by Departmental funds. Research areas span the research interests of the Department, with particular emphasis on Protein and Genomic Engineering, Cellular and Subcellular Bioengineering, and Physiological Systems Dynamics associated with neuroengineering and integrated cell-tissue-organ biomechanics. These fellowships are awarded and administered by the Department Chair and Graduate Committee.
  • Presidential Graduate Fellowships are provided by the University. Applicants are nominated by the Graduate Committee.
  • Dean's Fellowships are provided by the College of Engineering. Applicants are nominated by the Graduate Committee.
  • Martin Luther King, Jr. Fellowships provide two years of funding to outstanding African-American applicants from the University, in recognition of Dr. King (who received his Ph.D. from Boston University).
  • Graduate Research Fellowships are granted to students with relatively well-defined research interests at the time of application. Research areas include Pulmonary Engineering, Hearing Research, Biodynamics, Cellular Biomechanics, Neuroengineering, and Biomolecular Engineering. These fellowships are awarded and administered by the Department Chair and Graduate Committee.
  • Graduate Teaching Fellowships, awarded and administered by the Department, allow students to gain teaching experience while taking classes in the first year.
