Fellowships & Financial Information
Almost all PhD students we admit are provided fellowships, along with guarantees of continued financial aid as long as they remain in good standing. These fellowships come from a number of departmental, college, and university sources. Admitted MS students usually receive partial financial aid or join laboratories as Research Assistants immediately upon their arrival.
Special programs for which interested students may apply in the Statement of Research Interests and Financial Aid Application
Training Program in Quantitative Biology and Physiology Training Program in Biomedical Engineering and Biomolecular Pharmacology.
Following is a listing of some of the fellowships that are awarded by the department to admitted PhD applicants. Students need not apply specifically for any particular fellowship, as decisions will be made by the department and college.
-
Departmental Fellowships
are supported by a
Whitaker Leadership Award
and supplemented by Departmental funds. Research areas span the research interests of the Department, with particular emphasis on Protein and Genomic Engineering, Cellular and Subcellular Bioengineering, and Physiological Systems Dynamics associated with neuroengineering and integrated cell-tissue-organ biomechanics. These fellowships are awarded and administered by the Department Chair and Graduate Committee.
-
Presidential Graduate Fellowships
are awarded by the University. Applicants are nominated by the Graduate Committee.
-
Dean's Fellowships
are awarded by the College of Engineering. Applicants are nominated by the Graduate Committee. " Martin Luther King, Jr. Fellowships (from the University) provide 1-2 years of funding. These fellowships are named in honor of Dr. King, who received his Ph.D. from Boston University.
-
Graduate Teaching Fellowships, awarded and administered by the Department, allow students to gain teaching experience.
PhD students in BME are required to serve as Teaching Fellows for at least one semester during their time at BU, but do not serve during their first semester.
-
Graduate Research Fellowships
are granted to students with relatively well-defined research interests at the time of application. Research areas include Pulmonary Engineering, Hearing Research, Biodynamics, Cellular Biomechanics, Neuroengineering, and Biomolecular Engineering. These fellowships are awarded and administered by the Department Chair and Graduate Committee.
-
Research Assistantships
support students once they have chosen a particular laboratory home. Typically, students join labs near the end of the first academic year, but some students join labs before matriculating. This is particularly true for MS students.
