Eye diseases, aging, and plasticity

Dr. Sandell's lab is small, with 1-2 graduate students and occasional summer students. We maintain active collaborations with the other members of the Boston Retinal Implant Project, including colleagues at the University of Louisville (KY) and University of Bern, for our studies of retinitis pigmentosa and an inducible model of retinal degeneration. We also have a newly funded NIH-SBIR collaboration with a local company, EIC Laboratories, to investigate the therapeutic application of neurotrophin-eluting hydrogels in animal models of retinal degeneration. At BUSM we have extensive interactions with the other participants in the program project investigating the neurobiology of the aging monkey.

Julie Sandell Ph.D.
Dr. Sandell is the director of the laboratory. She received her doctorate from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Dr. Sandell is broadly interested in the str ucture of the visual system, particularly the way in which it responds to the perturbations o f genetic defects and aging.
Patrick A Scott Ph.D.
Patrick A. Scott completed his B.S. at Canisius College, his Master of Science in Vision Science as well as a Doctor of Optometry degree at The New England College of Optometry.
